March in the Garden

This first things that bloom on the farm are the grape hyacinths. These little beauties are a very inspiring sight because it means spring is coming. Now in Texas, we can’t be sure that the last freezes are over but you can now see the light at the end of the tunnel. However, these past few days the light has been very dim with this record low temperatures. Thankful after inspection this afternoon everything survived with minimal damage on the foliage of some of the plants.

If you are like me, you are really itching for the daylight savings to come, for warmth, and spring to officially start. These warmer days in March and even the cold ones there are some things that you can do now to prep your garden for bounty.

It’s time to plant:

• Trees, shrubs, and other permanent plants.

• Begin warm season crops such as tomatoes, peppers, zinnias, cosmos, etc. These are to be planted out after April 6th - April 10th

• Continue to plant cool season annuals such as petunias and snapdragons
